Introduction

About Table Communities

Table Communities are community gatherings for the purpose of:

  • Building meaningful relationships through intentional time together
  • Engaging in mutual discipleship through directing one another towards Christ with truth shared in love
  • Multiplying grace through love, prayer and gifts of the spirit

The notes will guide you through praying together, reading scripture and engaging in intentional relational time together. There are also notes and practices for this month's habit of grace. We know that most groups will not have time to discuss the habit of grace during their time together, but they are available if time allows and are available for those seeking to intentionally engage with God's grace during the week. If that desire is within you, please read the notes on your own time or go through the habit of grace practices with a spiritual friend or your spouse, so as to build one another up in truth and love. Finally, this gathering is not about getting through all the note content, but rather this gathering is about building meaningful relationships, engaging in mutual discipleship and multiplying grace. Let those values shape the direction and pace of your time together.

Remember: What we all have in common

Saint : Beloved, forgiven, being renewed, filled with the Holy Spirit

Sufferer : Carrying real pain and struggle

Sinner: Still in need of ongoing grace

Kick off with prayer

Somone pray for your time together.

Example prayer, if needed. Ideally pray freely as you feel called:

Father we praise you for gathering us together. Despite whatever weighed on our hearts as we entered this house, we pray that your Spirit guides our time together and free us from anything that is not of you. We pray that by the strength of your might we may speak truth in love to one another. We pray that we are led by the gifts of your spirit, so that we may build up one another and your church as a whole. As we read your word, we pray that we may be filled with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner pleasing to you.

Passage: Chosen. Held. Loved. | John 17

We will read the text together seeking for God to give life to the text through his Spirit. "Lord please help us to hear your word and receive what you have for each of us"

John 17: 1-8

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.”

Passage Summary

Jesus lifts His eyes to the Father as the cross approaches. He speaks of glory, authority, eternal life, and the people the Father has given Him. Salvation is not presented as human achievement, but as a gift flowing from the Father through the finished work of the Son. Eternal life is to know the Father and the Son, Jesus.

Discussion

Discussion Questions

Jesus speaks of those he received from the Father. Every loving relationship has a beginning. Perhaps one person pursues another and the other joyfully receives, perhaps the pursuit is initially unwanted and there is a long journey, perhaps it was mutual love at first sight. How did your relationship with Jesus begin and what role did you play?
  • Looking back, I can now see Jesus was pursuing me before I noticed Him.
  • For a long time I felt resistant or indifferent, and faith grew slowly.
  • It feels as though I have pursued Jesus, but He has not reciprocated.
  • From the beginning I felt Jesus pursuit, and that is what brought me in.
  • I’m still not sure how my story began, but I know something keeps drawing me.
Jesus says the Father gave His people to the Son before they even knew Him or had done anything to earn it. Where in your life do you still feel the order gets reversed, as though if you do the right thing, then God will love, accept, or choose you?
  • When I fail spiritually, I feel I need to make up for it before regaining relational ground.
  • In seasons where I compare myself to others, and I think they are loved based on their gifts or abilities
  • When I think productivity equals worth.
  • When I assume God is pleased only when I am doing well.
  • I fake to others that I am doing well as I believe it is a reflection of my faith and worth.
Jesus says, “This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Throughout the Bible, to know someone is relational and personal, not merely informational. Have there been seasons where God felt close or distant to you? What does your relationship with Him feel like right now?
  • I know truth in my mind but feel distant in my heart.
  • God has felt near in prayer lately.
  • I feel dry but still hungry for Him.
  • I feel confused but want to trust Him.
Jesus says, “Yours they were, and you gave them to me.” The Father chose you in love and gave you to His Son. Jesus then poured out His compassionate sacrificial love on all those He received. Have you known moments in life where you felt deeply desired and loved? What changes in a person who becomes secure in that kind of love?
  • A person often lives with peace instead of anxiety.
  • They become less controlled by the opinions of others.
  • They find it easier to give and receive love.
  • Days are filled with joy and laugther
  • No fear or rejection or failure
  • They stop striving to prove their worth.

How we experience life is shaped by: Our relationship with God, How we view ourselves, What others are saying to us and Our circumstances. If God could significantly touch one area of your life this week, what would you ask Him to do?
  • My relationship with God feels distant and I want fresh closeness with Him.
  • I need freedom from pressure and striving.
  • I need healing in how I see myself.
  • I need peace in a difficult circumstance.

Pray for and minister to one another
